OVERVIEW

Here’s a fantastic opportunity to travel with like-minded people and attend the once-a-decade renowned Oberammergau Passion Play. The play itself is a powerful and deeply moving religious experience. There is a rich 400-year history surrounding the small village in Bavaria fulfilling the vow to God to perform the Passion Play.  Our tour is designed to help us better appreciate this context and join our thanks to those offered by all the generations that have gone before us. This tour also takes advantage of the European spring season, with the beauty and mild weather.  There’ll be plenty of time to enjoy some of the great German-speaking cities of central Europe – Berlin, Dresden and Vienna; experiencing the life, culture, religion and history of these cities.

Archdeacon John Davis leads this tour, his second time to Oberammergau. He is the former Vicar General of the Anglican Diocese of Wangarattta. Before that he was vicar of St Peter’s Eastern Hill in Melbourne.  He has also been on the faculty of Trinity College Theological School.  He is a church historian with his doctorate addressing the development of the national Anglican Church in Australia. A major lifelong interest and study has been 20th century Germany, including the role of the Churches. He has also co-authored ‘The gift of St Francis’. John has led several groups to Assisi, as well as to Oberammergau.

With the long flight over, we are met at the airport and taken to our Berlin hotel.  Berlin is one of the great world cities, once again the German capital. Split down the middle by The Wall at the height of the Cold War, the reunified city has now experienced a massive rebuilding. At the heart is elegant grandeur of the central avenue, the Unter den Linden, stretching from the parliament and the Brandenburg Gate through to the museums, cathedrals and the royal palace (under reconstruction) at the eastern end. History, politics, intrigue, culture, tragedy, beauty - all go together to make Berlin unique.
