OVERVIEW

Travel to the Holy Land and walk where Jesus walked. Then continue to the village of Oberammergau in Bavaria, Germany to enjoy the once in a decade Passion Play.

Graeme & Helen McClimont are experienced tour leaders to the Holy Lands.  They have worked as Salvation Army officers for a combined total of 72 years prior to retirement.  They have served in many places and situations, having been corps officers, served in social services appointments particularly amongst young and homeless people; in addition they have taught theology, biblical studies, pastoral care and church history at the College for Officers in Melbourne, when Graeme was the Education Officer.

Graeme & Helen have served in Australia in various states as well as Papua New Guinea and the United Kingdom in a variety of leadership positions including Cabinet and Divisional Leadership and in management of extensive social services.  In addition, Graeme is trained as a clinical counsellor and social worker, having degrees from Latrobe and Melbourne Universities, with extensive experience in community development as well as social research.

Graeme & Helen are experienced travellers mostly taking an independent and alternative approach to travel.  Pilgrimage is important for them, having also walked part of the Camino, stayed on Iona and visited Oberammergau in 2000.   They are parents, proud grandparents and this year will have been married for 50 years.

ITINERARY

Your Cathay Pacific flight departs mid afternoon for Hong Kong, with a connecting flight to Tel Aviv.

Arrive at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv where you will be met and assisted through customs before boarding the coach. You will travel to your hotel beside the Sea of Galilee.

After breakfast this morning we will see the 1st century “Jesus Boat” found at Kibbutz Nof Ginosar, an authentic Sea of Galilee fishing boat from the time of Jesus. From here we take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee; while on board there will be time for a service and to reflect on Jesus’ life and teachings with the boat floating silently. Arriving at Capernaum we will see an ancient synagogue and St. Peter's house which was later converted into a church. Also by the shore you will visit Tabgha, site of the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes. Continue to the Mount of Beatitudes where the Sermon on the Mount is remembered. Head up the Golan Heights to the Springs of Banias, also known as Caesarea Philippi where Peter said "Thou art the Christ". End the day with a splendid view of the Sea of Galilee from the Golan Heights beside Yarmuk River. Also included today will be a typical St. Peter’s fish lunch at a restaurant near the Sea of Galilee.

Today we will visit Cana, scene of the first miracle and visit the Church of the Wedding. Then onto Nazareth and see the oldest Church of the Annunciation with Mary's Well. Then we will go back in time with a visit to Nazareth Village. This is a carefully researched recreation of what a Galilean village would have been like 2000 years ago giving a unique insight into village life and agriculture, as it would have

been at the time of Jesus. Drive to Mt Tabor, site of the Transfiguration of Christ. End the day at the Baptismal site on the Jordan River. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast we will travel to Megiddo to see the ruins of this amazing hilltop city overlooking the Jezreel Valley and considered the Armageddon of the New Testament, including a visit to Ahab’s tunnel. Continue to Haifa and from Mount Carmel we will have a wonderful view of the area. Stop at Caesarea, once the capital of the Roman province, and see the harbour from which St. Paul was taken to Rome. If time permits we will proceed to Jaffa, where Jonah set sail. Finally we will drive up the Judean hills to the holy city of Jerusalem.

Start today with a spectacular view of Jerusalem from Mt. of Olives - Walk down the Palm Sunday Road and visit the Church of all Nations at the Garden of Gethsemane - Visit the Pool of Bethesda and St. Anne’s Church, traditional birthplace of Mary’s mother. Pass through Ecce Homo Arch, visit the Convent of the Sisters of Zion and see Jerusalem from the roof of the Austrian Hospice. Follow the Via Dolorosa, passing the Stations of the Cross to the Church of The Holy Sepulchre. End the day at the Church of the Dormition. Overnight and dinner in Jerusalem.

This morning drive to the Tomb of the Kings on Mount Zion and visit the tomb of David, the Upper Room. Continue to the New City and passing the Hebrew University and the Knesset, we will visit the Israel Museum and the Shrine of the Book and then to the 2nd Temple Model of Jerusalem. Proceed to Yad Vashem to see the Museum of the Holocaust. After lunch we will visit return to our hotel for free time.

Today we will drive to Bethany, home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Continue to Bethlehem to see the Church of the Nativity and after lunch on to the nearby Shepherd’s Field. Return to Jerusalem and conclude the day with a service, Holy Communion and time for reflection at the Garden Tomb.

Free day to explore Jerusalem on your own. Perhaps venture to the lively pedestrian district of Ben Yehuda and Nakhlat Shiva in the New City where restaurants, shops & cafes abound, or a visit to the Mahane Yehuda market to taste some traditional Middle Eastern treats.

Much of today’s touring will be in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
An early departure from the hotel this morning as we start our day by entering the Old City and on to the Temple Area with the Al-Aksa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock where Abraham was going to sacrifice his son. We will first have a tour of the underground Western Wall Tunnels, followed by a visit to the Western Wall. We will see the Cardo, the Burnt House and the Herodian Mansion. After lunch we will go to the City of David for a quick visit to see Warren’s Shaft. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Today we travel to Qumran where the Jewish Essene enclave lived in community and see the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden. Continue along the shore of the Dead Sea onto Ein Gedi and then to Masada, the stronghold of Jewish resistance to the Romans. Here take the cable car up to visit this impressive site – a magnificent mountaintop fortress of Herod overlooking the Dead Sea. Enjoy lots of laughs as you take a float in the Dead Sea.

Depart our hotel in the Dead Sea and drive through the arid Negev desert to Tel Aviv airport for your flight to Munich. On arrival in Munich you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

We depart Munich early this morning and travel 90 minutes to the village of Oberammergau. Spend some time in the village before the Passion Play commences at 2.30pm. There is a break for dinner and the Play concludes at approximately 10.30pm. Transfer to your Oberammergau accommodation for overnight stay.

Today we farewell the picturesque Oberammergau and travel 90 minutes to the Austrian town of Innsbruck.
On arrival we will enjoy a guided walking tour of the Old town enjoying the Imperial architecture, churches and museums.

This morning we will enjoy a guided walking tour of Salzburg before departing for Vienna.
On arrival in Vienna we will have a panoramic driving tour of Vienna followed by a walking tour of the main centre.
Tonight we will celebrate our final night together with a Farewell Dinner. We will be joined by City Commander Major Hans-Marcel Leber and social services section leader Ulrike Knecht who will give a presentation on The Salvation Army’s work in Vienna (TBC).

Then travel to the Bavarian village of Oberammergau for the performance of the Passion Play. The river cruise begins in Budapest, then sets sail for Bratislava, the Slovakian capital. Continue to Vienna, the world’s most livable city before continuing to Linz and the cobblestones streets of Passau. After docking in Innsbruck you will have 2 nights there before driving to Oberammergau for the Passion Play performance.

Archdeacon Emeritus Ray McInnes and his wife Glenys have had over forty years’ experience serving the Anglican Church in Parish Ministry. Ray and Glenys both retired from full time work last year. Ray was previously the Vicar at the Albert Park parish for 12 years during which time they successfully led four Christian pilgrimages and tours overseas.

They have a passion for travel and enjoy sharing new experiences and places with fellow travellers. Their daily reflections in this context often become a highlight of the journeys they lead. As always, their contribution to the journey is teamed with the marvellous support and planning of the Mission Travel/Selah Team.

Ray and Glenys recently cruised the River Danube and look forward to revisiting with fellow travellers this beautiful part of the world and adding to it the famous Passion Play at Oberammergau staged only once every ten years.

 

The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe has been Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, since 2012. He is passionate about people, and prays that the Cathedral may be a place where many can experience the transforming love of God.

Andreas’ academic research centres on theology, as well as ecclesiastical and music history. He enjoys thinking about the Bible and Theology, in particular the way in which Scripture can be communicated through music, and has published widely in the fields of ecclesiastical history and music.

He is a Fellow and Lecturer at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Prior to coming to St Paul’s Cathedral, Andreas was Senior Chaplain of Trinity College, The University of Melbourne, and Gavan Senior Lecturer in Theology at Trinity College Theological School, the University of Divinity, where he taught undergraduates and graduates, and mentored students preparing for Anglican ministry.

Andreas grew up in Germany and was educated in the United Kingdom. He is widely travelled, especially throughout Europe, fluent in German, and takes great pleasure in introducing people to his homeland.
