Join Jesuit Father Michael Ryan and Good Samaritan Sister Colleen Leonard on a Pilgrimage through Paris, Loyola, Montserrat, Manresa, Barcelona, Venice, Verona, Padua, Assisi & Rome.  Following the footsteps of Ignatius of Loyola, Founder of the Society of Jesus in 1534 .

Colleen Leonard is a Good Samaritan Sister, Retreat Facilitator and Spiritual Director at the Campion Centre of Ignatian Spirituality, Kew, Vic. Colleen has passionate belief in the transforming power of a pilgrimage journey in the footsteps of Ignatius of Loyola. Colleen has travelled across Europe, the Holy Land and more recently a life-changing solo pilgrimage to the homelands of several mystics including Ignatius. She believes that this rich, reflective and cherished experience will depth participants’ awareness of God’s active presence in Ignatius’ life and impel their own desire to live life faithfully, hopefully and lovingly.

ITINERARY

Today we leave Australia bound for the city of Paris! Suggested flights would be with Emirates departing Melbourne at 9.15pm arriving Dubai at 5.15am. Depart Dubai at 8.20am and arrive Paris on September 23 at 1.30pm.

On arrival into Paris Charles de Gaulle airport at 1.30pm take the train to your hotel. The remainder of your day is free to rest.

In 1528, Ignatius of Loyola arrived in Paris, alone and on foot, to begin the midlife university studies that helped him shape the plan for the new Society of Jesus that he submitted to the pope in
1539. Ignatius’s experiences in Paris is documented as a “fool for Christ” who at one point had to beg for subsistence, but who “intended to prove that economic realities were not the only indicators of whether to honour or belittle a man.” Ignatius studied at the College de Montaigu and then at the age of 43 obtained a master’s degree from the University of Paris.
On the morning of the 15th of August,1534, in the chapel of church of Saint Peter, at Montmartre, Loyola and his six companions, of whom only one was a priest, met and took upon themselves the solemn vows of their lifelong work.
No arrangements in place regarding guides, transport or sights, just a day at leisure on arrival.

Today we enjoy a picturesque train trip from Paris’ Montparnasse station to the city of Irun. On arrival in Irun we will be met by a coach for the short drive to Loyola. Settle in to your accommodation.

Full day excursion to Aranzazu, Azkoitia & Bilbao (Bus + Guide)
At 9:00am travel to Azkoitia, Inigo’s mother’s birthplace and continue to Aranzazu to visit Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu with free time for lunch (own expense).
After lunch travel to Bilbao to visit the Old Town and spectacular Guggenheim Museum (3 hours) Return to Azpeitia around 8.30pm for dinner.

Today we spend the day exploring St Ignatius’ home town of Loyola. Mass in the Chapel of Conversion (subject to confirmation).

Today we travel across Spain to Montserrat. Along the way we stop for morning tea in Pamplona to see the Loyola monument, then lunch at Javier and visit the impressive castle for one hour (audio guide provided). Continue to Montserrat.

Enjoy a morning walk to watch the sunrise followed by Lauds in the Basilica. Explore this sacred site. 11.00am High Mass. See the “Black Madonna” place of pilgrimage for centuries.

Depart from Manresa for the drive through Catalan country to the city of Barcelona.
On arrival we will visit the amazing Sagrada Familia. This church commenced construction by Gaudi in 1882 and is expected to be completed in 2026-2028!
We will explore other Ignatian sites with our bus and guide before checking in to our hotel for dinner at a local restaurant and overnight.

Today we farewell Spain on an afternoon flight to Venice. On arrival in Venice transfer to your accommodation for a 2-night stay.

Today we will enjoy a guided half day walking tour of Venice including visit the Basilica of San Marco and the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar.

Check out of our hotel and drive to Padua for a 90-minute lunch stop and explore.
Continue to Verona where we visit the famous balcony from Romeo and Juliet as well as the spectacular Arena, a Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st century.

Today we farewell Verona and travel by bus to Assisi. Enjoy 2 hours in Assisi before continuing to Rome. Check in to the hotel for dinner at a local restaurant and overnight.

Today we will do the Scavi tour under the Basilica of St Peter. We will then visit the various Jesuit sites such as the Church of the Gesu as well as Mass at the Church of Ignatius. The remainder of the day is free. Dinner at a local restaurant.

This morning we will walk to the Vatican City for the papal audience. We will need to arrive early to ensure a great seat. Rest of the day and evening is free.

This morning we check out of the hotel and store our bags with reception. The day is free for you to explore and do some shopping before you leave and transfer to the Rome airport for your flight home. Your flight departs Rome at 10.05pm.
